My artwork "Above and Below" (colored pencil and oil pastel on the Icarus Drawing Board) has been awarded the Expy Best of Show and Prismacolor Award in "Explore This! 6", the Colored Pencil Society of America's online exhibition. The juror, Dr. Barbara Grazul Hubbard, has selected the work of 55 artists for this annual prestigious exhibition which will run until January 31, 2011.
Edit (2/4/10): Katherine Tyrrell wrote a post about "Explore This! 6" on her blog Making a Mark. You can read her wonderful comments on my artwork by clicking here.

Woo-hoo! Congratulations Ester!!! Definitely a most deserved award. BTW love the swing. I don’t have the height in my studio so I guess one hanging from the tree outside will have to do!
‘Above and Below’ is beautiful and most captivating. And gosh, just how might all of this swinging during break time influence your work? You go girl! :-)

I am a great admirer of your work. I love your new painting “Butterfly Effect.” How did you finish this work? It appears to be mounted without mat or glass. Do you spray with a fixative and then varnish? If so, what products have you found that work best?
I would love to attend one of your workshops but, because of distance and finances, it is unlikely that I would ever be able to do that. Do you plan on publishing a book and/or DVD?

Hi Helen, thank you for your kind words. You’re right, “The Butterfly Effect”, along with all my other artworks, is mounted without glass. After spraying several coats of Prismacolor Final Fixative (Gloss), I mount the artwork on a cradled board with Grafix Double Tack Mounting Film. Finally I apply Golden Polymer Varnish with UVLS (Gloss) with a soft brush. The piece is now ready for framing without glass.

A belated congratulations Ester! This drawing is amazing, and I look forward to hopefully seeing it in real life. BTW, I can’t believe your cat will stay there while you swing in your studio! Very calm.
