18" x 18" - Wax-based Media (Colored Pencil, Artist Crayon, and Oil Pastel)
Created with the Icarus Drawing Board.
This is my latest work in my pebbles series - a very abstract approach to nature. I took this picture in my studio and I've had the hardest time balancing the colors correctly. I'm fairly satisfied with the results but as soon as I get a professional scan, I'll decide if this image will need to be replaced.
I've had a lot of fun with this project, the subject of which is a group of pebbles I collected on Moonstone Beach in Cambria.
It will be my entry for Explore This! 7, a Colored Pencil Society juried online exhibition which will be on display on the CPSA website for one full year, from February 1, 2011 through January 31, 2012.
Edit (10/24/10): you can read about the specific technique I used for this artwork on a previous post titled A Shortcut for Details.

This is amazing, Ester. I love the abstracted linear wave shapes contrasting with the slick stone surfaces. As an abstract artist myself, starting to play around with realism, I think you melded the two artforms beautifully. It must be breathtaking when view at true size and in the original.

Thank you for visiting, Terry, and for your nice comment.
Isn’t it interesting how artists coming from different sides of the spectrum, one realism and the other abstract art, end up crossing each others’ path and perhaps even landing in the same spot?
I find that I’m naturally progressing toward abstract-realism (if there even is such a movement) and I’m really curious to see where this will take me.

This is a beautiful portrayal of the rocks and water and its subtle abstractness (is that a word?!). You know I’m a fan of drawing stones myself. I also like your combination of mediums. No doubt I will see it in Explore This.

Thank you, Kendra.
I think Debbi, you and I should start a stones fan club!

This is so beautiful, Ester. I especially love the surface design in the ‘ice’ - it’s quite captivating; almost hypnotic. I totally agree it must be wonderful full size.
